Color design and injection molding process in the electronic cigarette industry: challenges and solutions

Apr 01, 2024

In the current increasingly competitive environment of homogenization, electronic cigarette brands shape their personalized labels through refined appearance and color design. However, this personalized demand has also brought a series of industry pain points, such as increased difficulty in injection molding processing, high conversion costs, color mixing problems, and color differences between batches. At present, the industry mainly adopts two coloring processes: raw material+color powder injection molding and color matching injection molding. The raw material+color powder injection molding method directly adds color powder to the raw material during the injection molding process, which has the advantage of high color flexibility but faces problems of mixing uniformity and dust pollution. The method of color injection molding involves mixing plastic raw materials with color powder or masterbatch, which has the advantage of good color stability but inflexible color adjustment. The two methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the specific selection should be comprehensively considered based on factors such as production demand, cost control, and color stability requirements.
In the current environment of increasingly fierce homogenization competition, electronic cigarette brands are refining their appearance and color design to shape their personalized labels and attract end customers. However, this personalized demand has also brought a series of industry pain points, such as increased difficulty in injection molding, high conversion costs, color mixing problems, color differences between batches, and considering the color differences of the same product between different mold factories from the perspective of CMF (color, material, finish), which has made the color control department tired of responding. At present, the industry mainly adopts two coloring processes: raw material+color powder injection molding and color matching injection molding. Below, we will compare and analyze these two processes.
1, Raw material+color powder injection molding method
Firstly, let's learn about the injection molding method of raw materials and color powder. This method involves adding color powder directly to the raw material during the injection molding process, mixing it evenly before injection molding. The advantages of using this method include high color flexibility, relatively low cost, and the ability to obtain injection molded parts with uniform color through thorough mixing. However, this method also faces issues of mixing uniformity and dust pollution.
2, Injection molding method with color matching by particle drawing
Secondly, let's take a look at the injection molding method of selecting particles and matching colors. This involves mixing plastic raw materials with color powder or masterbatch (colored plastic particles), processing them into specific colored plastic particles through a granulator, and then injection molding. The advantages of this method include good color stability, reduced dust pollution, and simple operation. However, the color adjustment of this method is not flexible and the cost is relatively high from a single perspective.
The two methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the specific selection should be comprehensively considered based on factors such as production demand, cost control, and color stability requirements. For production scenarios that require frequent color adjustments or pursue cost-effectiveness, injection molding of raw materials and color powder may be more suitable; For production scenarios that require ensuring color stability and reducing environmental pollution, it may be more ideal to mix and match color injection molding. In practical applications, these two methods can be flexibly selected or combined according to specific situations.
