UK Minister of Health: The government is considering restricting the taste of e-cigarettes
Oct 16, 2023
The UK government is considering restricting the taste of e-cigarettes to combat underage smoking, and the Minister of Health is concerned that children may be attracted to flavors and packaging such as bubble gum. The government consultation considers banning disposable e-cigarettes, restricting sales and packaging, raising prices, prohibiting cartoon images, and restricting taste descriptions. This measure aims to reduce children's exposure to e-cigarettes, especially targeted dessert flavors. The government will also seek international best practices that may turn e-cigarettes into prescription drugs.
According to the ITV Festival report on October 13th, British Health Secretary Steve Barclay stated that the government is considering how to reduce the attractiveness of e-cigarettes to children, especially for flavored and brightly colored packaging such as bubble gum. He stated that as a father, he was concerned that his children would be exposed to e-cigarettes as a result.
Barclays stated that they are particularly concerned about how e-cigarettes attract children with the appearance of bubble gum flavors and desserts. Currently, one fifth of children have tried e-cigarettes, and the number of people using e-cigarettes has tripled among children. He stated that the government clearly stated that targeting children through e-cigarettes is wrong.
Barclays' remarks were made during the government's consultation on this issue. In addition, when asked if e-cigarettes should be turned into prescription drugs, he stated that they were searching for international best practices. If e-cigarettes are turned into products that can only be purchased through prescription, they are concerned that this will reduce the number of adults turning to e-cigarettes. He said, "We want to find a balance, which is what we are doing all over the UK
The 8-week consultation will seek opinions on how to encourage smokers to use e-cigarettes to quit smoking, and also seek advice on how to reduce the attractiveness of e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18. The plans under consideration include a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes, restricting their sales, or ensuring that they cannot be sold in a way that may attract young people.
In addition, the government is considering measures such as introducing more plain packaging, prohibiting the use of cartoons and child-friendly images, regulating whether stores can display e-cigarettes, and increasing prices. In terms of e-cigarette flavor, options to consider include limiting its description to make it more universal, such as not having flavors like "blueberry muffins".
