Australia Launches New Regulations To Strictly Control The Entry Of Disposable E-cigarettes By The End Of November

Nov 14, 2023

Australia plans to implement a strict ban on the import of electronic cigarette products by the end of this year. This ban will restrict the import of over-the-counter electronic cigarette products and limit electronic cigarettes to doctors' prescriptions and pharmacies. This is considered one of the most important smoking reforms in Australia in a decade.
According to Australian media PerthNow on November 14th, Australian Health Minister Mark Butler stated that Australia will introduce the strictest one-time electronic cigarette entry regulations in history by the end of November.
Butler stated that this law will be implemented in stages starting from January 2024, ultimately enabling state police and health authorities to effectively enforce import bans on all e-cigarettes (excluding drugs used to quit smoking).
Last week, Australian border authorities seized approximately 35 tons of e-cigarette products after importers attempted to smuggle them, and found that these products contained nicotine.
In May of this year, the Australian government announced a ban on the import of over-the-counter e-cigarette products, marking the largest smoking reform in a decade.
According to regulations, the only electronic cigarettes legally allowed in Australia are products that are prescribed by doctors and distributed through pharmacies to help people quit smoking. The new measures will impose strict restrictions on the packaging and taste of medicinal e-cigarettes, and may extend the ban on smoking in the workplace from cigarettes to e-cigarettes.
Butler stated that he met with colleagues in the health department last week to discuss the main concerns of millions of teenagers who may suffer from nicotine withdrawal due to the upcoming ban.
According to a study released by Cancer Victoria in June, over 3.5 million Australians aged 14 and above use cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
