Belfast, UK Calls For A Nationwide Ban On The Sale Of Disposable E-cigarettes
Dec 11, 2023
According to a report by 4ni on December 7th, the Belfast City Council in the UK will submit a consultation response to the UK government on creating a "smoke-free generation" and a draft to address the issue of excessive smoking and electronic cigarette use among teenagers.
The consultation draft proposes numerous restrictions on tobacco and e-cigarette sales, including a plan to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarette products across the UK.
"Belfast is facing an increasingly serious problem of smoking among children and young people. These products can lead to addiction, harm health, and have an impact on the environment. The current sales legislation is insufficient, so as a city council, we fully support the strengthening proposal in the consultation draft," said Micky Murray, Chairman of the Belfast People and Community Committee and City Councilor
He stated that both tobacco and e-cigarette sales should undergo mandatory age checks, the taste of e-cigarettes should be restricted, packaging should be regulated, and the sale of disposable e-cigarettes should be completely prohibited.
The Belfast City Council has currently implemented purchase testing in retailers to prevent the sale of e-cigarette products to teenagers under the age of 18.
Member Murray said:
"Although selling e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18 is illegal, there are no regulations for retailers' registration, no restrictions on display of products in stores, and no resources to identify illegal and harmful additives."
