Brazilian Health Supervision Agency Initiates Public Consultation On E-cigarettes And Accepts Public Opinions Within 60 Days

According to Brazilian media Poder 360, the Brazilian National Health Supervision Agency (Anvisa) launched a public consultation on the use of e-cigarettes in Brazil on December 12th local time.
This consultation will last for 60 days and everyone has the right to participate. According to reports, the organization banned the use of e-cigarettes in Brazil in 2009. However, in July 2022, the board of directors of the institution made another resolution on the issue, but still unanimously decided to maintain the ban.
According to reports, there are various types of e-cigarettes, with the most common being atomizers, which allow people to inhale atomized gases with flavors and nicotine. In addition, there are also some electronic cigarette devices that can heat tobacco without burning it.
According to Antonio Barra Torres, President of the Brazilian National Health Service, in a public consultation announcement in October 2023, the issue will be reassessed after collecting all opinions.
Brazilian psychiatrist Jorge Costa e Silva, who previously served as a director of the World Health Organization (WHO), supports the standardized management of e-cigarettes.
He believes that all prohibited things are harmful and opposes comprehensive prohibition. His viewpoint is that what many people do not understand is that standardized management and comprehensive prohibition are two different things.
The report concludes by pointing out that Gonzalo Vecina, a professor at the School of Public Health at Universidade de S ã o Paulo and former director of the Brazilian National Health Supervision Agency, also supports the standardized management of e-cigarettes.
He also noticed that nicotine in e-cigarettes is harmful to health, but he believes that these devices pose less harm than traditional cigarettes. Given that traditional cigarettes are now allowed, he believes that electronic cigarettes should also be allowed for consumption.
