Spain Plans To Restart Strict Smoking Bans, Expand Smoke-free Areas, And Increase Tobacco Prices

Dec 13, 2023

According to Theolivepress, the Spanish Ministry of Health's "2021-2025 Comprehensive Plan for Smoking Prevention and Control" may soon restart strict smoking bans.
For many years, people have been speculating about specific details, including the smoking ban on terraces and whether it will expand to private cars and beaches. Beaches across Spain are gradually being designated as "smoke-free beaches" and measures are being taken by various municipal authorities.
The report states that the department will "study every option" to expand smoke-free areas and ensure that tobacco is no longer a part of the daily lives of future generations.
Spain's tobacco prices are one of the cheapest in Western Europe, so a higher pricing strategy may also be effective.
It is widely believed that the strategy of the Ministry of Health will include regulation of smoking, which is particularly prevalent among young people.
The Ministry of Health has begun to pay attention to the situation in other countries such as France or the United Kingdom, which are implementing measures to restrict or even ban the use of e-cigarettes (especially disposable e-cigarettes), while also considering raising the age at which people start smoking.
The government's intention is to "quickly" expand tobacco related bans, but this may mean that anything - especially tough pro tobacco lobbying groups - is likely to exert pressure to oppose any measures they consider harsh.
In addition, there is a relatively minor issue, which is how to get Congress to pass legislation, and only a minority of members in Congress support the Pedro Sanchez administration.
