Recently, according to Newsday, a bill banning the sale of e-cigarette products disguised as school supplies and personal items in Suffolk County, New York will be publicly heard on December 5th.
The bill prohibits the sale of e-cigarette devices such as highlighters, USB drives, ballpoint pens, phone cases, smartwatches, and backpacks.
The initiator of the bill, State Councilor Jim Mazzarella, stated that he wants to ensure that the bill is consistent with state laws, including the definition of smoking, and that violating regulations may result in businesses losing relevant licenses.
In August of this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to 15 online retailers for selling and/or distributing unauthorized e-cigarette products whose packaging looks like cartoon characters, school supplies, toys, and drinks that attract teenagers. Selling e-cigarettes to people under the age of 21 is illegal.
Kent Sopris, the chairman of the New York Convenience Store Association, an industry organization based in Albany, stated that the organization supports the bill and the county should commit to implementing it.
It is reported that New York State banned the sale of e-cigarette products online in 2020. Data shows that in 2022, approximately one out of every 10 American high and middle school students, or 2.55 million people, used e-cigarettes at least once within 30 days of being surveyed.
