Hillsborough County, Florida, USA: Measures To Ban E-cigarette Shops From Opening Near Schools
Dec 25, 2023
According to Fox News, the Hillsborough County Legislature in Florida, USA, took a step on Wednesday to approve a measure that no longer allows e-cigarette related stores to open near schools.
According to a warning in Florida, county councilors from Hillsborough County took a step closer on Wednesday to approving a measure that no longer allows e-cigarette related shops to be opened around schools.
This proposal will impose a 180 day ban on at least 20% of commercial activities related to electronic cigarettes within a 500 foot radius of schools. "It's hard to come up with a good reason to open an e-cigarette shop next to a school," Hillsborough County Councilor Michael Owen proposed this regulation.
According to county government data, there are currently approximately 200 such commercial activities within a 500 foot radius of Hillsborough County schools. This proposal will not affect those stores that have already opened, nor will it apply to convenience stores, but it will have an impact on newly opened stores.
"I was shocked to see so many shops close to the school, as I expected there to be much fewer. However, unfortunately, it's difficult for us to handle those already open stores because they opened before the land development code was revised," Owen said.
School district leaders in Hillsborough reported earlier this year that over 60% of high school students in the county have tried or are using e-cigarettes.
The congressman has recently considered a similar plan, but it must be postponed due to waiting for state regulations to be lifted. Now that it has happened, they are reconsidering this idea.
