On October 12th, the official website of the World Electronic Cigarette Association published a review article titled "India: How Far Can the Electronic Cigarette Ban Go?", pointing out that India's smoking ban policy has deprived 270 million Indian tobacco users of the right to safer nicotine alternatives.
The article states that the Federal Ministry of Health of India has recently clarified that the possession of e-cigarettes is strictly prohibited. Even more inhumane is that relevant departments have launched a portal website on which citizens can accuse their compatriots of violating the law (possessing e-cigarettes) and even track them during the investigation.
The Electronic Cigarette Association of India is consulting legal experts to understand whether officials can reinterpret government policies (prohibiting the possession of electronic cigarettes), especially criminalizing millions of Indians who attempt to quit smoking through electronic cigarettes. If necessary, the Electronic Cigarette Association of India will support legal challenges to this new interpretation.
The World Electronic Cigarette Association calls on the Indian government to reconsider the inefficient ban on e-cigarettes and develop practical harm reduction strategies, respecting the choices of adult consumers and enabling them to switch to less harmful alternatives, thereby greatly improving the country's public health.
